PAN

Horizontal camera movement. 2) To move the camera horizontally while taking a picture. See also TRACK.

PANORAMA
-
1) A photograph with a much wider horizontal view than the standard ratio. 2) A series of digital photographs stitched together to create an image that is much wider than the camera is able to capture. 3) A digital camera feature that lets the user take 3 photographs that are then stitched together to create a panorama. 4) A picture mode in APS film cameras. PARALLAX

The difference between what is seen through the optical viewfinder and what is seen on the LCD viewfinder because the viewfinder is separate from the lens. This issue does not affect SLR cameras.

PDF

Portable Document Format. A highly compatible file format developed by Adobe Systems. Often authored with Adobe’s Acrobat application and best viewed with that company’s Acrobat Reader. Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows XP both feature the ability to save to PDF. See also ACROBAT.

PHOTO PAPER

Specially coated paper designed for printing photographs with an inkjet printer. 2) Specially coated paper designed for printing photographs from negatives in a darkroom.

An inkjet or other printer that can be used to print photographs.

PHOTOSHOP & PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS

Popular digital imaging software developed and marketed by Adobe Systems. Photoshop allows for color correction, tonal adjustment, sizing, cropping, image manipulation, compositing and special effects. Photoshop CS is the full-fledged version used by professional photographers and graphic designers. Photoshop Elements is an inexpensive version with fewer features for home users and serious amateurs.

PIXEL

Short for pixel element. A pixel is the smallest part of an image on a computer screen or on the sensor of a digital camera. An image is made up of a grid of pixels.

PIXELATION

PIXELIZATION
-
The appearance of pixels as individually discernible boxes. The result of enlarging a bitmap image such as a digital photograph beyond its optimal range for its image size. The higher the resolution of the image, the higher the magnification before pixelization becomes noticeable.

POLARIZING FILTER
-
The most commonly used photo filter. Reduces and eliminates glare from reflective surfaces such as water or glass and darkens the appearance of the sky. See FILTER.

PORTRAIT MODE (SETTING)
-
A mode that optimizes camera settings to take pictures of a human subject, emphasizing the subject rather than the background.

PORTRAIT ORIENTATION
-
A vertically oriented photograph, that is , where the height is longer than the width. 2) The default orientation for printers. Not to be confused with PORTRAIT MODE. The opposite of LANDSCAPE ORIENTATION.

POSTSCRIPT
-
A page description language developed and marketed by Adobe Systems. Used on high-end laser printers and other image setters to produce high quality text and image output.

POINT-AND-SHOOT CAMERA

PROSUMER
-
1) An advanced amateur who is between a consumer and professional. 2) A camera that has enough advanced functions so that it can be used by an advanced amateur or professional. Low-end Digital SLR cameras and some high-end compact cameras are considered to be prosumer products.
