24-BIT IMAGE
A computerized image that uses 24-bits per pixel to display colours and is able to display up to 16.7 million colours, thus closely approximating what the human eye can see.
8-BIT IMAGE
A computerized image that uses 8-bits per pixel to display colours and is able to display up to 256 colours or shades of grey. Although not precise enough to accurately duplicate the range of colour seen by the human eye, an 8-bit image produces a smooth enough gradation of grays to replicate the quality of a black & white photograph. See also BLACK & WHITE, GRAYSCALE.
