NEGATIVE
-
An exposed piece of film from which a traditional photograph is printed. It is called a negative because bright areas appear as dark and vice versa, and because colours appear as their opposites on the colour wheel.
-
NICKEL CADMIUM/NiCAD BATTERY
-
A type of rechargeable battery that is not used for digital cameras as it does not have a large enough capacity and suffers from memory effect.
-
NICKEL METAL HYDRIDE/NiMH BATTERY
-
A high-capacity rechargeable battery used in portable electronic devices such as cell phones, notebook computers, PDAs and digital cameras. Unlike older rechargeable batteries, NiMH batteries do not suffer from a memory effect and will not lose their ability to hold a charge if they are not fully drained between charges. Unlike Li-ON batteries, NiMH are widely available in generic formats such as AA and AAA and can therefore be used with any cameras or other electronic devices that use regular alkaline batteries.
-
NIGHT MODE
-
A mode that automatically chooses the best camera settings for night or low-light photography.
-
NOISE REDUCTION
-
A feature that reduces the production of digital artifacts when shooting in low-light conditions or using a high ISO setting. Doubles the time between shots because of the additional time required to process and save the image. See also RECYCLE TIME.
