Liquid Crystal Display. A flat panel that uses liquid crystals between two glass plates to create an image.
LCD VIEWFINDER
Located on the back of a camera, sometimes on a pivoting platform. An LCD used to view the image that is being captured.
LED
Light-Emitting Diode. A small semiconductor that emits coloured light. Often used as a status indicator. LEDs are usually red, green, yellow, or white.
LENS
A combination of glass or plastic elements mounted on the front of a camera and that focusses light on a sensor or on film.
LENS HOOD
An optional, open-ended accessory that fits over the front of a camera lens to reduce the effect of strong light and glare on the final photographs.
LENS SPEED
The widest possible aperture on a camera or lens. The wider it is, the faster a camera is said to be.
LIGHT METER
A device that measures the quantity of light and determines the correct exposure setting for a camera. It is built in to compact digital cameras and can be used automatically or manually.
LITHIUM ION (Li-On) BATTERY
A high-capacity rechargeable battery used in portable electronic devices such as cell phones, notebook computers, PDAs and digital cameras. Unlike older rechargeable batteries, Li-On batteries do not suffer from a memory effect and will not lose their ability to hold a charge if they are not fully drained between charges. Li-On batteries typically take the form of special battery packs designed for specific products.
